Create a hanging indent

When you create a citation for your research paper, you will need to make sure that it is formatted correctly! When listing your citations in your References/Works Cited/Bibliography, you will need to make sure that you use something called a hanging indent. While a regular indent is used at the start of your paragraph, a hanging indent has the first line flush to the left, then all lines following will be tabbed over. Here are examples of these two types of indentation:

 

In the next two tabs, I will include instructions on how to get your citations to look like the bottom example in Microsoft Word and in Google Docs!

1. In order to create a hanging indent, you will need to select the citation (or citations) that need to be formatted. Highlight the citation(s) and right-click. This should bring up the following list. Select the "Paragraph" option.

2. From here, a box that looks like this should pop up. Go to the area that is titled "Indention", then "Special". Select "Hanging" from the drop-down menu, then click OK. 

3. This should format your citation to have a hanging indent!

1. In order to create a hanging indent, you will need to select the citation (or citations) that need to be formatted. Highlight the citation(s) that you need to be formatted. From there, go to the top and select "Format", then hover over to "Align & indent". This should bring up another menu. Select "Indentation options" from the list

 

2. From here, you should get a box that pops up that looks like the image below. Click on the drop-down menu under "Special" and select "Hanging".

 

3. This should format your citation to have a hanging indent!
