"Kate L. Turabian's Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations presents two basic documentation systems: notes-bibliography style (or simply bibliography style) and author-date style (sometimes called reference list style). These styles are essentially the same as those presented in The Chicago Manual of Style, sixteenth edition, with slight modifications for the needs of student writers."

Chicago style has two options

Author-Date used by scholars in the social sciences and sciences.	Notes/Bibliography used by scholars in history, arts, and humanities
An in-text citation (parenthetical) A reference list	A superscript number in the text and corresponding note A bibliography

Chicago Manual of Style (17th edition; numbered style)
The Notes-Bibliography System (NB) is used by those in literature, history, and the arts. The Author-Date System is preferred in the social/sciences.
