Moore Cataloging Procedures

Classed: Spoken word and CD/DVD-ROMS

Classed Sound Recordings (chartreuse dot)

Shelve these at the circulation desk in the section for classed sound recordings, according to LC class number.

This group of recordings includes the following three categories:

1. Spoken word or music sound recordings that accompany books

Moore Library will give these recordings the same LC class number of the book it accompanies.

A note about the item record for the accompanying sound recording:

Create an item record for the disc. This item record should be attached to the holdings record for the printed items. However, the permanent location in the item record for the accompanying piece should be the location of where it is shelved (Circ). The item type should however match that of the printed item, because this governs circulation. Example for item record: Location: Circ    Item type: [same as that for the book]

Current practice is to shelve classed CDs that accompany books at Circ under the call number. This section is identified by a chartreuse dot on the disc's container. (Blue dot CDs, which are musical sound recordings, are also located at Circ but have a MFHD location of RIDL and a blue dot, which puts them in a different area of Circ.)

2. Spoken word recordings that are audio books

This refers to audio recordings of books published originally in print.
Moore Library will classify these with the same LC class number used for the book, whether or not we own the book. If we already own the book, be sure to give it a matching class number. The Aud.CD on the label and potentially the date of the sound recording added to the call number will distinguish it from the the book's call number.

3. Spoken word serials or periodicals on CD, such as Dialogue

These spoken word serials will be classified. As an example, the audio periodical called Dialogue is an ongoing series of audio CDs of interviews and discussions broadcast on NPR. After the new shelving arrives for media, they will eventually be shelved either separately, to allow for expansion, or along with the other classified sound recordings, with enough space to allow for expansion. The issues of this title will continue to carry the class number of D1. D5 and will have the same dot color (chartreuse) as the other classified audio CDs.

A note about CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs

Please do not confuse CD-ROMs with audio CDs. CD-ROMS and DVD-ROMs will be labeled as CD-ROM or DVD-ROM and given a chartreuse dot, and they shall be intershelved with the classed sound recordings in the chartreuse section. This means that the cataloging holdings symbols for RID& titles and for classed RIDL titles will be intershelved in the same location, based on class number, with the same color dot. However, the call number label will indicate the format (CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, Aud.CD, etc.)
