Special Collections Procedures, Services and Policies

The Special Collections and Archives materials are non-circulating and are kept in a closed stack area. The reference librarian on duty can assist with access to most materials that are cataloged; the Special Collections librarian can assist with collections that are in process or have other restrictions.

Researchers who are not affiliated with Rider University will be asked to register and show photo identification. Affiliates will also be asked to register for access to uncataloged materials (those not assigned a call number). Registration forms are kept on file in the event that the researcher wishes to make multiple visits.

Digital or photographic reproduction of materials

Under conditions of U.S. Copyright law (Title 17, U.S. Code), libraries and archives may make reproductions of materials that will not be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” Use of any materials beyond these purposes may violate copyright law. While Talbott Library strives to encourage scholarship and research, the library reserves the right to limit or refuse reproduction requests if it judges the request to violate or potentially violate copyright law.

Special Collections accepts requests for digital scans or audiovisual reproduction through the duplication request form. Duplication requests are filled at the discretion of the Librarian for Special Collections, and are contingent on the condition of the item; copyright restrictions; the extent of the request; and the availability of staff.

DUPLICATION REQUEST FORM

Fees charged by University Library are for reproduction costs or use based on ownership of the materials by the Library. They do not grant the right to publish, nor do they represent a claim to copyright.

Depending on the extent of the request, a processing fee may be assessed based on staff time used.

Permission to publish or perform

Permission to reproduce materials does not constitute permission to publish or perform. Upon receipt of the request, the Librarian for Special Collections will produce a contract, including terms and a use fee (if applicable). In general, not-for-profit agencies may use materials from the collection free of charge. Proposals for use of materials by for-profit agencies are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. When permission for use is granted, acknowledgement of University Library's Talbott Music Collection, Westminster Choir College of Rider University as the owner and source of the material is required.

Users are solely responsible for determining copyright status of the material in question.
