Brainstorming Words to Search

When you search in a library database, don't type your question, as you might in Google, TRANSFORM into  a search statement: divide your question into distinct concepts.

For example:

How to workers feel about their jobs?

Becomes:

Box 1: Workers AND box 2: jobs AND box 3: Feelings

-or-

What value or meaning do workers find in their jobs?

Becomes:

1. Identify different concepts. Highlight the nouns.

What value or meaning do workers find in their jobs?

2. Think of synonyms for these concepts.

Workers Jobs Meaning

Employees

Work Value
Laborers Career Attitudes
Staff Occupation Motivation
Personnel Employment Satisfaction

3. Use the different search boxes in the advanced search of a library database to start a search, one for each concept. Use the operator OR to connect synonyms or similar concepts.
