Writing Program Notes

Why do we need program notes?

You've been preparing for this recital for what feels like FOREVER. You feel like you have a good understanding of the music you're singing/playing, but how can you enhance an audience's understanding of your performance?

This is where your program notes come in!

Did something happen at the premiere performance of the piece (reception history)? Did the composer embed (or even hide!) something in particular in the music that you want to bring attention to? Do you feel a connection to this piece? Does it hold a relevant message in today's society?

YOU will learn even more about your pieces by writing your program notes!

So, why are they important?

They help the audience to better understand the music and an idea of what to expect.

They give YOU a better understanding of the music and an idea of what to expect.
