Additional tools: Selected Databases

The Additional Tools section notes that certain databases are included by default in a search: "Your institution has selected the following default setting, which are recommended for most searches." These are listed in the "Selected databases" box.

  • University Library's default selection is called "Selected Search."

The Additional Tool section of the Advanced Search Screen is shown. A box containing the list of Selected Databases as tokens you can remove is shown. There are three symbols in this box: an x, and dot encircled with a counter-clockwise arrow, and a downward/upward arrow. Captions in red lettering identify these as clear (the x), reset (the dot with the counter-clockwise arrow), and expand to choose (the arrows).

You can choose a more specific set of databases to search based on subject area.

1. Expand the Database box to see the subject area choices.

A dotted red arrow points from the expand to choose to a list of database subject areas that has opened on the left side of the screen under the Selected Databases box. This list includes: Computers & Technology, Business, Communication, Journalism & Media, Education, English/Languages Literatures & Cultures;, Gender & Sexuality Studies; Government, Politics & Law; Health Sciences & Nursing; and History/Philosophy. Selected Databases is highlighted, and a list of databases included here appears to the right of the database list.

2. Click the X in the Selected Databases box to clear the default, called "Selected Search."

An arrow from the "Selected Databases" in the open databases menu points to the "X" in the selected databases token box above.

3. Select a new subject category, such as "Gender & Sexuality Studies."

  • Notice the "Selected databases" box is empty from clearing it with the "X" in step 2.

Under the open menu of databases by subject, Gender & Sexuality Studies is highlighted. To the right of this panel, the All checkbox has a red square around it, indicating to check it.

4. Select All, or choose individual databases.

  • The databases you select now populate as tokens in the "Selected databases" box above.

The All button is selected under the "Gender & Sexuality Studies" databases, so all of the databases listed there have white and purple checkmark. The databases now appear as tokens in the box above, as they are now the "Selected databases"--the ones we just selected!

5. Collapse to return to search screen.

A red arrow point to the collapse arrow on the expandable database menu. A caption instructs, "Collapse to return to search screen."

After making any additional selections, click the purple Search button.

  • These filters can be applied or changed after your search, too.

Under Additional Tools, we see additional options we can choose. Sort, Search Results Display, Expand this search with, Held By Libraries. "University Library @ Rider University" is the default check for Held by Library. The purple search button is at the bottom right corner of the screen, next to a white and gray Reset button outlined in light purple. The captions on the image say, "Make any additional choices. These options can be modified in the filters after your search, too!) Now... Search!"
