WMS @ Rider

OCLC's WorldShare Management Services (WMS) is University Library's new ILS.

WorldCat search options

Proposal: Put link in Course Reserves in the box where Journals is now.

A to Z interface is ejournals only, not print and microfilm, so it does not accurately reflect our holdings.

  • Books & Scores = filters to books and scores.
  • Media= filters to video, music, and audiobook
    • "Audiobook" seems to encompass all non-musical sound recordings (mat type=i; 336 spoken word), whether they are a book or not. I.e., radio, podcasts, other spoken word
      • "Sound recording" is not a term used in WorldCat.

Note: The instructions say that there is only one category allowed per tab, (only books, not books and scores), but the code works, so I don't see what the problem is.

  • The search box is coded so that all tabs have to be limited to the same scope:

University Library @ Rider University  OR
Libraries Worldwide

Ours is set to University Library @ Rider University.

Same for parameters:

  •     Default sort is "Best Match"
  •     Default index "Keyword."

Keep in mind:

  • Purpose: to show new search box and new links for the Databases (new Springshare A to Z interface) and Journals (WMS AtoZ)
  • We need to add Course Reserves tab
  • FAQ menu is outdated here; breadcrumbs till show.
  • Code can be adjusted
  • We experimented with taking the background picture out for a cleaner look--what do you think?
    • We can fix the buttons underneath to be more prominent.

Q: What are the databases turned on in Discovery? And how is this different?

A: Worldcat.org, databases in Central Index, and remote databases (EBSCO + two Proquest)

  • The databases in the Central Index provide article information from the database, but not necessarily the same amount of metadata as in the native database (Academic Search Premier does not have subject headings).
  • Academic Search Complete and Business Source Complete are in the Central Index, while other EBSCO databases are remote. Film & Television Literature, Education Full Text, and General Science FT  aren’t represented at all, but citations from these may appear in other Worldcat.org or Central Index databases, and the link to FT will be from the KB.
  • You can see all the databases in the Central Index by going to the advanced search under "Selected Search"

Databases NOT in Central Index NOR Remote (but turned on in KB, so links will appear when citation are found)

  • Film & Television Literature FT
  • SciTech Premium
    • But subset Science Database is; not Technology Collection, though
  • HeinOnline
  • DRAM
  • MetOpera on Demand
  • MediciTV: has OCLC records per video title, so these will appear.
  • MathSciNet

WorldCat Discovery

4/17/25:

  • Advanced Search page. Melissa has set up preliminary database categories for searching, a default and various subject searches. This is a topic open for discussion, and which I will present and demonstrate at the Department meeting on 4/24/25 for more clarity. I will ask subject liaisons to review the databases listed in their areas to see if any were missed or should be removed.
    • The default is "Selected Search," which searches all of the Central Index databases only (that is, no EBSCO remote.)
      • Rationale: Less confusing for users starting out. The Database tray with all the options would be overwhelming on a preliminary search.
      • Users can then select a subject category that will include the relevant EBSCO databases.
    • EBSCO databases show up in the "database tray" at the bottom, as do ProQuest's GenderWatch and Dissertation and Theses. They open the search in the new window in the native database interface.
      • EBSCO searches may need to be modfied because of the way they are passed with a lowercase "and".
    • Other databases are part of the Central Index.
    • Film & Television Literature, Education Full Text, and General Science FT are not available as a Remote Database. However, these packages are turned on in the KB, so links to the journals we have available there will be active on citations from other databases and from WorldCat.org.
    • Some Central Index databases, such as LA Theatre Works, are redundant because they are in the KB with full OCLC records and don't see seem to have real OCLC records. I turned these off, as they have poorer metadata and also do not provide FT linking, because the records don't match the KB.
  •  See Search the Central Index and Remote Databases in WorldCat Discovery to understand how this works: what are results from WorldCat.org, the Central Index, and Remote Databases.
  • It is important to understand the distinction between the KB (databases and purchases turned on in Collection Manager) and databases searched in WorldCat Discovery.
    • The KB contains all of our FT holdings and ebooks/streaming, etc., both as part of databases and our direct purchases. This will provide the link to the resource no matter the source of the citation. All KB titles (books, journals, streaming sources) have a corresponding OCLC record. This makes them part of the database "WorldCat.org."
    • Databases in Discovery are using select metadata from the databases both available and enabled, which may not match the extent of the citation in the native database (see link above for further explanation). My example is that while Academic Search Premier is available in the Central Index as "Academic Search Complete," the citations do not have subject terms, as EBSCO hasn't allowed that.
    • For best subject access, refer students to the individual database.
    • Example: Digital Theatre+ consists of three collections in the KB: Audio Resources, Video Resources, and Written Resources.
      • The items included in this database all have OCLC records. Thus, they are a part of the database WorldCat.org.
      • There is no corresponding database in the Discovery called "Digital Theatre+.
      • However, Digital Theatre+ items exist in Discovery results as part of the WorldCat.org database that is part of every search. Notice the database attribution in the following DT+record: https://rider.on.worldcat.org/oclc/1263653925.

4/4/25:

  • Branch filters are now available! You will now see University Library and Talbott Music Collection appears as filters under University Library @ Rider University.  Like this:

Talbott Music Collection

  • KB holdings have been updated under RID to reflect our combined holdings from Sierra sent to WMS.

3/19/25:

  • Our new locations and item data have not been added yet.
    • Talbott Music Collections holdings are not yet reflected
    • What you are seeing is existing WorldCat holdings and additions from the KB (e-resources).
  • SW and MH are working on our e-holdings in the Knowledge Base (KB) in Collection Manager.
    • Our ebook collections (subscription and purchased) are turned on.
    • Our subscription streaming media collections are turned on.
      • Purchased and hosted streaming media (MediaSpace, New Day, etc.) in process; need to create local collection.
    • MH is checking linking to make sure the link resolver works for each collection.
    • Database and journal packages are in process.
