Learning Objectives

Hi! I'm Prof. Melissa Hofmann, and I have created this guide to best help you complete your assignments for your CMP-125 class with Dr. Kranzler.

This guide will give you the context and basics in research strategies and tools, so you can save yourself time and get the most out of your learning.

It's a complicated world of information, and the Rider University Libraries are here to provide you with access and help you navigate.

 

The library home page, featuring the search tabs of One Search, the Catalog, and Reserves, and other menu items such as the FAQ, Ask a Librarian, Chat, Interlibrary Loan, Research Instruction, and Study Room Reservation.

1. How to search a database

  • Generate keywords for your topic (Video "Generating Keywords" and Keyword Generator)
  • Review Searching Tips and Strategies page
  • Enter keywords into separate search boxes
  • Find more keywords and subjects from your results
    • Try different combinations of terms

2. Identify and evaluate your source type.

3. Cite your source ("Cite" feature, *NEW* "Export" and RefWorks *NEW*, and MLA guide).

4. Choose a specific database to search in

  • Databases button from library home page: Subject
  • Databases found in Library One Search
  1. Articulate the place of the academic library in the information landscape.
  2. Navigate and describe the resources available on the library home page.
  3. Differentiate between source types and their purposes (presentation and discussion)
  4. Use Library One Search to find sources on your topic.
  • Navigate the screen and understand search filters and options.
  • Combine keywords into an effective Boolean search (Introduction: we will practice this more next time!)
  • Limit by academic journal, magazine, trade publication (or the library catalog).
  • Evaluate results.
  • Modify search if necessary.
  • Get the full text.
