Request Research Instruction

Fostering the development of information literacy (IL) and enhancing connections between teaching and learning for lifelong success is what we do at Moore Library, and instruction is a key component. Instructors know their students and their needs best. That is why we work with instructors to create an instruction session around an assignment and require instructors to attend the session. We recommend that students have an opportunity to practice the new skills they have learned immediately after instruction.

Instruction options:

  • A series of instruction sessions in a semester
  • One instruction session held in a library instruction room to allow for hands-on practice
  • A demonstration done at your classroom (20-30 minutes)

We also offer 1-1 appointments for faculty AND students for help with maximizing a research effort.

Topics we can cover:

  • An introduction or demonstration of a resource (Library One Search, Nexis Uni [formely LexisNexis Academic], Academic Search Premier, etc.), followed by hands-on student practice
  • Review of plagiarism, in-text citation use and works cited page, how to read a database record to create a citation, use of Noodle Tools
  • Topic creation: how to search for ideas and how to broaden and/or narrow a topic
  • Finding journal articles (Including search techniques like identifying keywords, effective use of Boolean searching, truncation, and controlled vocabulary) and distinguishing between popular vs scholarly work.
  • Finding opposing views on a controversial topic
  • Finding images and assigning proper attribution
  • Evaluating Information for authority and bias
  • Evaluating websites
  • IL concepts from the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education
  • Other – tailored to your course’s need

Reserving the Library Presentation Center

The Library Presentation Center II (L-337) may be booked no more than one week in advance and if there is no conflict with a library instruction session. Reservations are received on a first-come, first-served basis. The Library Presentation Center may be reserved for classes which require a large screen viewing of audio/visual materials or computer presentations. The room may not be used for non-library sponsored events at which no audio visual materials are used. Food and drink are not allowed in the Library Presentation Center. If a faculty member wishes to have his/her students use the Library Presentation Center for class preparation purposes, the faculty member must assume responsibility for the use of the Library Presentation Center, including the equipment use, by the students.
